Memories of My Aunt Grace

My Aunt Grace passed away yesterday. And I am sad.
My husband and I are on vacation. We are in a historical place, and yesterday we had been seeing the sites. We were sitting on a bench to rest for a few minutes, watching the horse carriages going back and forth, and absolutely enjoying ourselves. And then my phone rang.
When I heard the news, I could not speak. I listened about what happened, how it happened, and the outcome. I could hear my mother sobbing in the background. And then I cried, briefly, but with all my heart.
I love my Aunt Grace. Always have, always will. When I was small and lived in Ohio, every summer Daddy would drive us to New Jersey, where my mother's family lived. We would spend several weeks there, and sometimes I got to stay for the summer.  But always, after a 12 to 13 hour drive, within 15 minutes my Aunt Grace had me in her car, going...somewhere!

Life was an adventure to me with her. She took me to meet family I had never even heard of. And friends that I didn't know she had. I came to know all the folks she worked with at the knitting mill, and even knew their kids.

She took me horseback riding often. She didn't ride, but she watched proudly as I rode around and around, in my element, loving it the whole while. She never complained about the time, and I am sure there were many times she paid extra just to let me ride longer.

She took me to the store, shopping, just riding around. I was introduced to flea markets and yard sales. She took me to Fort Dix, where my grandfather had worked, so often I knew my way around. And she would take me to McGuire Air Force Base, right next to Fort Dix, to watch the planes taking off and landing. I loved it!

Aunt Grace had been adopted by my grandma and grandpa because it seemed Grandma could not bear a baby who could survive. So, while living in Akron, Ohio, they adopted a 3 year old girl, and named her Grace Lee. My Aunt Grace.

She helped Grandma raise 3 other children who came along naturally. God was blessing them with biological children. My mom was the first, when Aunt Grace was 12, then my Uncle Darrell, and finally Aunt Pat, who passed away in 1994, a year after Grandma.

But Aunt Grace, while slow, was raised by my grandma and kept under her thumb. It was not done in a mean spirit, but in the vein of protecting her from the outsiders, from those who may hurt her, or cause harm in some way. So Grace learned to copy grandma in her lifestyle. Her friends were approved by Grandma, or not, and her activities were limited to what Grandma though appropriate.
She did not even learn to drive until it became a necessity. My grandpa had a massive stroke while at work on Fort Dix. He was a fireman. He never recovered, and passed away 7 years later, when I was 15. Grandma took care of him, did what she could to help him, and was faithful and strong that whole time. That strength took root in Aunt Grace as well. When he first fell ill, she went and learned how to drive. It became her responsibility to transport everyone in the family. She eventually saved enough money from her job to buy her first car. And that car became her ticket to adventure, and freedom.

Aunt Grace was never home. She wasn't doing anything wrong, she was just visiting everybody she knew, or taking someone somewhere, or cleaning some one's house. She was busy, and she was always willing to help someone else. She had some difficulties because, as I said, she was slow. She did not comprehend some things. It was like one part of her cognition had been cut off.

But she did know goodness, kindness, and how to laugh. She was so much fun. She showered me and the other grand kids to come with love, gifts, fun. She was life itself, and I always looked forward to spending time with her.

In later years, after she and Grandma had moved to Ohio to live close to us, where I also lived at the time, she became pretty independent. In this I mean, she made new friends, without Grandma's consent. She went where she pleased, and did what she wanted with her own money. She learned how to write a check and balance her own checkbook. Yes, Aunt Grace had come of age, although she was well in her sixties by that time.

So, for the last few years, she had given up a lot of that independence. She gave up her right to drive. She turned over most of her finances to my mom and stepfather. She made her own funeral arrangements with a local funeral home, which shocked my mom greatly when she found out. But it turned out that she just did not want to be a burden, any more than she needed to be, to those she loved, and who loved her. My Aunt Grace.

For the past year she has lived in two nursing homes. She did well until last November, when she moved from one to the other. I'm not saying that is why she passed. She was 92 after all. But something changed for her, in that soon after she moved, she started fading away. Soon, the woman who was always talking, asking questions, telling cute jokes, suddenly spoke very little, and here lately not at all. She knew us when she saw us, smiled and held our hands. But she never spoke again once she stopped. And then on Sunday night, she was taken to the hospital, put on life support, and then simply stopped living. My Aunt Grace.

There is now a void where joy had been. But that joy will come back, as already I am laughing in my mind and heart, and even with a little chuckle here and there, at the funny things she would say and do. Yes, I will miss her greatly, but my love for her will never stop. And one day I will see her again. I am confidant of this fact. Life doesn't stop with the end of the body's life. It is only beginning. And Aunt Grace is now healthy and happy, and simply the best she has ever been, or could hope to be. She is with Jesus!

Blessings!

'Yes, we are good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.'

ECUADOR BOUND

Yes, that's right. I will be traveling to Ecuador this June. I have been waiting 9 long years to go back, and now God has seen fit to use me there once again.

Not that He doesn't already use me! Gracious me, He keeps me rather busy, He does. And I love it. I may get tired, discouraged, and all around down, but He is the One who always shows me what He has done, even when I didn't realize I was a part of it. He is amazing.

I love that place. Truly. It is not only a beautiful country, rich in history, landscape, and culture. But the people...oh, the people! They are beautiful. They are friendly. They need Jesus.

There are many Christians there already, but there are other religions as well. And that is why we are going. We are going for Bible studies, children's Bible School, to spend time with orphaned children, to build a playground, but most of all, to minister to the souls God chooses to put in our path. You see, this is what God has called His people to do...to take the Gospel of Christ to the far ends of the earth.

I am going with a large group from my church, 38 people. We will be with the same missionaries we were with when we went the last time, only there were only 8 of us, and it was a singing mission. This trip promises to be something different for me, something I have never truly experienced, and I am so excited I can't hardly stand it. Give me patience, Jesus!

A couple of other things are different this time. The last trip, we sent letters to family and friends to raise our funds. And of course, most of us were also making payments, and saving up spending money. This time, there will be a couple of small fund raisers.

But my husband and I have decided we are paying for my trip ourselves. We are not sending letters to anyone. We are not finding other ways to raise money. We are simply...trusting God.

My inner self tells me that if God truly wishes me to be on this trip, then He is going to fund it. And the way I am handling it is that I won't be a burden to someone else. Times are tough right now, for alot of folks. But when I make my payments, I am finding God has rearranged our finances in some different way. I can't explain it and I don't need to. It's God. Simply put, it's just Him! And because He has been so gracious to us, my trip is nearly paid for! Hooray!

Over the next couple of months, we will be preparing. The greatest preparation we can do is to pray. Prayer is the answer to everything; it is the beginning, and it should be the end, when we give the praise and thanksgiving, and all the glory, to the God who made it all possible. Whatever the 'it' may be. So we are praying for the trip itself. We pray for the souls and hearts being prepared by a Holy God. We pray for the missionaries, who are preparing for our arrival, and into whose hands God is entrusting us. We pray for our prayer partners, who intercede for us daily. We pray for our families, for the time we are away. And we pray for one another. We all know satan comes against us the most when we are stepping out in faith for something, so you know he hates we are going, that we WANT to go, and what we will be doing once we arrive there.

So this is what I ask of you, whether you know me or not. Whether you understand about mission trips or not. If you are a Christian, I covet your prayers. Pray that I will pray, and that I will pray consistantly. I am already doing this, but you know how life can 'get in the way' of prayer, and Bible Study. Pray that I will keep my eyes on the goal, to serve Him, not myself. Pray for safety, for our entire team, pray good health, and pray for the divine appointments we are anticipating. Most of all, please, please, just pray that God's will be done.

I do not deny that I will enjoy the trip for other reasons. It is an adventure, and the older I get, the more I crave adventure! It is a beautiful place, full of mystery, waterfalls, glorious birds and monkeys...the most beautiful flowers and trees you could ever want to see. I see God's hand in every single thing there. But I see it here as well. He is everywhere. And He expects us to always be on a mission field of some sort...even if it be in our own living room, or at the fence with our neighbor in the back yard. You needn't travel to another country to be a successful missionary. If your heart belongs to Christ, you are one.

I thank you in advance for your prayers, for your good wishes. And be assured I will be providing you with details and pictures upon my return. For what God has done in our lives, we will share His glory with others, and constantly sing songs of praise to Him, and Him alone.

Blessings!

SURRENDER

The one true way of dying to self is the way of patience, meekness, humility, and resignation to God. (Andrew Murray).

In one word...surrender.

When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we enter into a relationship that not only seals our eternal life, but also changes us inside to who we were meant to be...God's chosen ones.

If we will go to Him in all patience, meekness, humility, and resignation, we are admitting that we give up all of our self to all of Him. In essence, we surrender all.

Once we've realized the meaning, the importance, the spiritual value of surrendering our lives, agenda, and purposes to His plans for our lives, we will learn how to walk with Him closely. We will see His plans, not ours. And what really happens to us is that all He wills for us will become our own purposes.

Surrender. This is not an act of weakness, but one of great strength. It is hard for us to give up even the most visible sinful areas of our lives. But we can do this, simply by believing. It takes much more intense introspection, prayer, and determination to see, and then to confess to Jesus, all those 'hidden' secrets that we harbor in our hearts. We all have them. To surrender, we must regularly give them up to the Lord.

God will take all our faults, sins, issues, whatever we have inside us that inhibits our relationship with Him, and sweep them away. When He does this, our thanksgiving will bring us even closer to our loving Father.

It's a good word, a great word. Surrender. Please consider it, and make it a part of who you are, in Christ.

Blessings!

Captive Thoughts

Living Water Daily Devotionals by Lili Richey Willard

about an hour ago via mobile.

'Bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.' 2 Corinthians 10:5

If you are a disciple of Jesus, and you live, walk, and breathe, you know how some days this is easy, while others it is nearly impossible. However, being perfect in God's eyes means to keep getting back up, to not give in, to persevere. To strive to think only those thoughts that are pure and lovely, good & uplifting. The world we live in says otherwise. But we know God is the one to please, not man.

So don't give up! Restrain from and run away from those thoughts that are less than holy. Fill your heart, mind, and spirit with God's Word. The struggle becomes winnable with His Word within us.

Blessings!

Come to Hear Jesus

'Then early in the morning the people came to Him in the temple to hear Him.'  Luke 21:38

Would it not be just grand to be able to go to a temple nearby & hear Jesus teach & preach? Well, we can!

Because He came & lived & died for us on that cross, the veil between God & us has been removed. We can go to the most wonderful  'temple' of all...the Throne Room of Grace.

There is no cover charge, no donation to be made, and the seats are all general admission. Jesus is there, at the right hand of the Father, and the conversation can & will go both ways if we will permit it.

God gives many blessings & gifts to His children. This is even more than those. This is a Christian's RIGHT! So accept it & use it. He gives it freely to you!

Blessings!

YOU DIDN'T JUST DO THAT! REALLY???

I have written about rejection before. I have dealt with it most of my life, and have allowed it to keep me from pursuing my hopes and dreams, even today. I am afraid to fail. But recently things have happened to me that have made me reconsider this phenomenon. I am now wondering if people really see me. Really?

Yes, really. Here are some examples, just a few, enough to wet the whistle, butter the bread, pay the piper...whatever!

I had a meeting with someone about an idea of mine, something I wanted to do in a venue I am involved with. Always encouraged to bring forth new ideas, I had taken my time, pondered over it, checked my resources, verified others would want to be involved, had a complete plan laid out. Took me six months to get the courage up to speak on it. Had a lovely meeting, very long and informative, I thought. It has been over a year, and no response.

I went to a place of business, within my employers business, and was standing in line behind one other person. Another woman walks up and stands beside me, both of us leaning on the wall behind us, waiting our turn. I thought. Then she decides she knows the person who was being waited on. She goes up to her, leans on the counter next to her, and begins a conversation. As the other person pays for her purchase, this woman simply slides into position, and becomes the person being waited on. I stand back and seethe with anger and indignation. Really??? You didn't just do that!!! I can't believe you have done this! Yes, I was outraged, amazed at the obvious rudeness, thinking about how my mama would slap me if I ever even thought to do that to someone.

'Didn't you know I was waiting in line? You were standing right next to me! What, did you think I was standing there just for the fun of it? How can you miss something this big?' My mind was reeling with the things I would have loved to say. I was humiliated and angry, and most of all hurt. She would be sorry she messed with me! Like I was a cowboy or a gunfighter or something. Geesh!

Then....my doctor's office all of a sudden forgot I existed. No prescriptions could be called in, no labs given to me, no appointment made for my 3 month. Nothing, nada. My husband was so angry he was going to call the doc's office for me. I said NO! But anytime I called, and left any kind of message, or asked for the littlest thing, I never got a call back. It took nearly two weeks to get a necessary prescription filled. I was so exasperated!

So, in my round about way of thinking, during all the hurt and rejection and pain I was feeling at the time, physical pain, I mean, I started re-evaluating what was happening to me. Why was I being rejected? What had I done? Most people seem to like me, and I have lots of friends. I always try not to be of bother to anyone, and am polite and kind. So what is up with me? What is wrong with me?

I am invisible. Yes, I am not always a victim of rejection, I am merely invisible. How can I blame anyone for these things if they don't see me? That must be my fault.

OK, so invisibility is also a form of rejection, but it is worse in some ways. Number one on my list is because of this; rejection is painful, it hurts the soul, but at least if you are rejected, someone has taken notice of you. When you are invisible, that is what hurts most...you are not noticed.

Now, I confess things are temporary in life, including these things I have described to you. They are seasons, and short ones at that. But during those seasons, I have experienced incredible sadness and sorrow, while enjoying my little pity parties at the same time. Sounds crazy, but something else; I have remembered why I always take the side of the underdog...because I know what it feels like to be both rejected, and invisible.

This is a lesson from the LORD. I am convinced of it. It sounds extreme, but when you feel like I did during this two to three week period, extreme is the situation. Once through it, I have realized I am not really rejected, and was not really invisible. People are indeed rude, more and more, they are rude. It is becoming a true blight on our society. And people are more often inconsiderate of other's feelings, like the person I met with, who dashed my dream with silence. It wasn't intentional. I know this person. This is NOT that person's usual way. But life has become so busy, that we all fall into both those categories, and along the way we cause hurt feelings, and we send the pangs of rejection and inferiority through someones heart.

Jesus said He would equip those who are willing. He will give us what we need to succeed. He has made sure we know that all things are possible through Him. Why then do we give up so easily, and let the silly idiosyncrasies of life overwhelm and drown our hopes, our dreams, our very lives?

I know my limitations. But I also know the limitlessness (new word?) of my God. So today I put away those feelings of rejection and invisibility, and of my fear of failure, and I step forward with a new attitude, a new promise, a new purpose in front of me. Really???

Yes, REALLY!!!

Blessings!

Review: Christian Film 'Inner Joy of a Broken Heart'

In today's very volatile backdrop of the Gay vs Christian issue, this film, produced by Noble Brothers Productions, hits the nail on the head in a subtly distinct way. Written by John-William Noble, this issue is handled with sensitivity and honesty, with the emphasis on doing the 'right thing', with Jesus as the focus of action.

Young Maurice faces a crisis of belief as he struggles with his personal thorn, being gay. His dilemma stems from knowing in his own heart that, although society has embraced homosexuality, making it acceptable in all venues, what God says in His Word is true, despite man's attempt to sugar coat it. He recognizes that culture has introduced the thought that we can change what Jesus has taught about homosexuality to match the lifestyle we want to experience. He also points out that many of today's churches believe the same. And his heartbreak comes from the lack of strength in Christians, of not standing up for what is right and good, but in allowing sin to override what God has intended.

Maurice confides in Natasha, a good friend who has feelings for him, and who does not understand why he keeps himself closed off in many ways. But Maurice eventually confides in her, revealing his struggle, and the fact that he carries guilt for the death of the young man he was in love with. This young man, Callum, did not understand or accept Maurice's aversion to following through with his sexual feelings for him, and in retaliation slept with another. Maurice just happened to walk in on the scene, witnessing what to him was an evil act, sex outside of marriage.

Callum goes to Maurice, and they have an altercation, at which point Maurice strikes Callum on the face. Callum believes that homosexuality is ok, that churches embrace it, so why shouldn't they? Maurice again takes a stand, pointing out that this is not what God wants for men and women, and that just because he may want to enjoy their relationship does not mean he can, as a Christian. And that he won't compromise.

Callum, in his desperation, takes his life right there in front of Maurice, which brings not only more heartbreak, but adds to his struggles to do and feel what is right.

This film is refreshing in the way it handles the issue of being gay and also being a Christian. The acceptance of being gay does not override the fact and the belief that those who are experiencing this situation need to identify first with Christ, and then stand on the Word of God in discovering ways to live with it.

Maurice reveals to Natasha that he has a plan, for helping others like him, and he may need to leave home to pursue that plan. While she does not want him to go, she supports him in his efforts.

The backbone of this film is not just about homosexuality...it is about standing on God's Word, believing it and putting it before our own personal wants and desires. To do the right thing no matter how difficult it may be, and to allow God to use us for His purposes, however He chooses to use us.

This film has a very nice flow, moving along quickly, and captures youth in all their excitement and zest for life and relationships. The characters are like people we all know and love, and the storyline is clear and concise, expressive and gripping. The emotions it stirs are varied, and once you begin watching, you will definitely watch all the way through. I believe it also displays a very different way of viewing those who are gay. Not all of them are pleased to be gay, and not all of them wish to live like that. This film explores the possibilities of using this 'difference' for the good of the Kingdom.

I highly recommend 'Inner Joy of a Broken Heart' for believers, and non-believers alike, who may have these struggles, or wish to be of help to those who do. This film, I believe, is of value to all Christians, and helps to reinforce 'the right thing to do'.

OBEDIENCE...CAN YA DO IT?

I can remember as a little girl how I loved Jesus. Yes, I really, really did love Him. He was my idol. I thought He was all that.

Now that I am much older, I know I love Him still, and even more than I could ever have imagined. The thing is, I haven't always walked with Him. Yes, it's true. There have been the times in my life when I was anything but obedient to the One I had given my life, and allegience, to. I allowed life, my friends, and the great big wide world to interfere in my very personal relationship with my God.

Rebellion. That word was big on my list at times. First it was my parents, then my teachers, and even well-meaning friends. I knew best, they knew nothing. Funny how age and experience change how you view things, isn't it? Not laughing funny, but funny funny. You know what I mean. It's serious stuff. And we should always treat it that way.

Older, wiser, and more aware is what I am these days. I can look back and honestly tell you that even in those times when I was walking in the other direction, I always knew God was with me. When I lived for the things I wanted to do, for the things I wanted, for the lifestyle I thought was 'cool', I can remember even talking to Him. Did He hear me? Did He listen to me? Because I was indeed saved, I believe He did. Because, you see, He wanted me back.

John 10:27-30: 'My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand. My Father, which gave them Me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My Father's hand.'

Once His, forever His. It's a promise. Straight from Jesus, Who is also God, directly to you. And to me. How awesome is that?

So, I have come to understand the importance of obedience. To my parents, to my employer, to anyone who is in authority over me, including my spouse, unless that obedience means going against God's Word. The ultimate obedience is to Jesus, who has done more than enough for me. If He never does one more thing for me, He has already done it all. For this I pledge my obedience to my last breath.

Think about it! Can ya do it? Really? Can you disregard your friends or co-workers when they make fun of you for it? Are you able to smile in spite of any persecution you experience, because you 'did the right thing'? Will you persevere, reaching for the goal, to obtain that good and perfect end, the race well run, the ultimate reward, even when it has become the difficult thing?

Jesus is worth it. He is all that there is that is of true importance. He created us for His enjoyment, not because He NEEDED us. He WANTED us. That's a whole different thing, that is. We exist for His pleasure.

So if we really want to please His heart, to bless Him, what better way than to show Him our obedience, which is truly our pure love for Him. Try it! I think ya CAN do it!

Blessings!

Christian or Sinner? (An Angelwing Devotional)

I always believed. Even as a wee child, the LORD Jesus was my friend. I loved Him then, and I love Him now. But I, like most kids, didn’t understand. When I accepted Him as my Lord and Saviour, I was naive. Mostly about the sin thing. It wasn’t until much later that I understood sin isn’t just about what’s in the Ten Commandments.

Once I attended an in-home church when we lived in New Jersey. The preacher and his family had gone door to door on our street, and very nicely invited us to his home later that week. Since I had not found a church since leaving our hometown a couple of years before, I was happy for the invite. So one night, my husband, my mother, and I went to this man’s home for a night of Bible teaching.

What I wasn’t prepared for was how he kept saying we were sinners. I mean, I hadn’t killed anybody, I didn’t tell lies, I sure didn’t covet the neighbors ‘anything’, and I did not take the Lord’s name in vain. I was offended.

I was polite the rest of the night, but I never went back. I could not understand how that preacher could call himself a Christian. Didn’t he know the difference between another Christian and a sinner?

This man had a very gentle manner about him, and his wife and young daughter were the same. I felt bad about it , but I could not listen to teaching from someone who was so wrong about who I was. I was my father’s daughter. He taught me well as I was growing up, how to treat others, how to say my prayers, how to tithe properly. So I knew it couldn’t be me.

The preacher came to our home a few more times, to politely check on us. He encouraged us to come back again. He invited us to the Sunday morning service. My husband would run and hide in the laundry room whenever he saw the poor man coming. So guess what…I found myself lying to this man of God.

Yes, I called him a man of God just now, didn’t I? And that’s because many years later, after finding a Bible believing, Bible teaching church, I finally saw the light. I know I was saved, and was Heaven bound, but I did not understand that we are all sinners, we are born to it, and that is the real reason the Father sent His Son to this earth I didn’t understand that sin can be as simple as wanting a dress so much that I can think of nothing else, or not reading my Bible as I should, or forgetting to pray. Sin is anything that comes between me and God. And that can be a lot of things.

So I believe, and I have faith. I know now how precious it all is. Faith is love. Faith is Christ.

Blessings!

Remember the Alamo!

Yes, don't we? John Wayne made it very memorable! But then, so did our history teacher when we were kids, right? I'll never forget when I saw the movie for the first time, how proud the soldiers in the fort were of their country, their families, and each other. And God.

Actually, the actual events that happened at the Alamo were very important to our country, and to us as Americans. Not only did those brave men stand for what they believed, they died for it. Not only were they outnumbered by literally thousands, but they fought on when they were given an escape. Not only did each one proudly defend his country, each one proudly gave all.

All through our country's history we see the same display. Many are not as well known, or celebrated, as the Alamo has been. We had the American Revolution, where men and women worked and fought tirelessly to establish a new nation. There were the Indian wars, of which we are not too proud to admit to. And then there was the Civil War, a war that tore our land apart, and pitted brother against brother, sister against sister, but again, all believing and standing for their beliefs. All proud and willing to, again, give all.

The more modern wars are equally full of great stories of bravery and heroism, victories and great loss. And even the wars and battles in the Bible show men, and sometimes women, holding their own, shouting their own victory cries, charging ahead fearlessly, to win that which was theirs.

God is always in the midst of war. He is there with the blood, the sweat, the tears, the fear, and the joy of victory. He witnesses each atrocity committed against each person, and His heart grieves at the tragedy that unfolds. But remember, God has purposes that we don't understand, and with those purposes come benefits for His people. If we go into battle with His name on our lips, He will carry the sword of life before us, and victory will be ours. He did it for the Israelites...He does it for us, each and every day, if we but ask Him.

No, victory does not always come in winning a war. Sometimes we lose. Sometimes we forfeit lives, just like at the Alamo. But standing for and with God is a win/win situation. Life, and you have His blessing. Death, and you are with Him forever. How can that be considered loss? If we are following Jesus, trusting Him, believing in Him, no battle will ever defeat us. Remember, we are more than conquerors in Christ Jesus.

'What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?'(Romans 8:31 KJV)

Remember the Alamo! And remember that God was there, just like He is here, with you and me, fighting our battles with us, never leaving us alone.

Blessings!

What Does God Say About...You?

'For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.' (Jeremiah 29:11)

I often ponder that thought...just what does God REALLY say about me? I don't know His mind. I can't envision His thoughts, or His feelings, or even His purposes, most of the time. But I can look to His Word, the Word that He Himself gave to us, to find out exactly what He says about me. Well, and of you too!

When God created mankind, Genesis 1:31 says that He saw every thing He had made, and it was very good. Ok, so for the very first thing, He was pleased with the man and the woman He had created. He wanted them. He didn't NEED them. God doesn't need anybody or anything. But He WANTED them. That right there warms my heart, knowing He wanted each one of us. Because remember, He wanted them, and then He wanted them to go forth and populate the earth. Well, isn't that how we got here?

Fast forward to Exodus 3:9-10. Yes, I've skipped over Noah and the flood, and Abraham and Him leaving his home and wandering into a new land because the LORD told him to. Also, how the LORD allowed Lot and his daughters to be saved from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. But this passage in Exodus just radiates to me again how God loves us. Shh...Listen!

'Now, therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them. Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.'

Doesn't that just scream out to us that God loved His 'people', so much so that He would use a man who could not speak publicly to deliver them from their slavery? He heard their cry. He knew they were oppressed. And He had had enough of that. And then He did indeed deliver them, from the bondage of slavery.

On to 1 Samuel 17. We learn of David, and how he bravely faced, and defeated, Goliath. You may say, what does that have to do with God loving us? Think of it this way...would God have allowed David the skill, and the strength, and especially the courage, to take that Giant down with a little old slingshot if He didn't love him? God chose to use David from that point on in so many ways to influence our lives, our choices, our understanding. He certainly does demonstrate that when He chooses an example for us; it is someone who may be different than us in many ways, but just the same, meaning human, in so many other ways. David was victorious. David fell. David stood back up. David died with God's hand upon him.

Queen Esther...one of my favorites! God shows love once again, for a young Jewish girl who may have easily forfeited her life, simply because she chose to speak to her husband, the king, without him speaking to her first. Sounds silly when we think about our freedom to speak to anyone at all today, doesn't it? But in that era, in that culture, that is exactly how it was. To save her people from certain destruction, she fasted and prayed, and asked others to as well, for three days, prior to going to the king to tell of her plight, of her fear for her people. And what did God do? He did what He always does for those He loves...He delivered her from harm, caused the king to respect her anew, and her people, God's people, were saved.

Now, here we go, into the New Testament. In Luke 1:26-38 we read of the sending of the angel Gabriel to Nazareth to speak with the virgin maid Mary. He told her that she had found favor with God, and she would bear a son, and would call Him Jesus. Of course she did not understand at first. Can you imagine an angel telling you these things? But she was obedient, for she truly loved the LORD, and she told Gabriel this. Is this not love from God? To be chosen as the one to bear His only Son? How amazing is that?

Let's look at John 3:16 now. We all know these words by heart. They are words of complete and uncompromising love. 'For God so loved the world...'. When He speaks of the world in this passage, it is not as the carnal, secular world. It is as the body of humanity. For you see, in this verse God is declaring His love for mankind. Yes, He loves each and every one. It has never been His wish that any should perish. And this verse leaves no doubt of that great love.

I could go on and on, but I would literally have to just copy and paste the whole Bible right here! There was the woman at the well...she was living in sin. But Jesus showed her who she was, and who He was, and her life was changed. There was the other woman who was about to be stoned. But Jesus defended her, taught a lesson to her accusers, and again, He changed her life.

We see lepers, the crippled, and the blind healed. We see the dead raised. We see oil flow continually until there are no more pots to contain it. We have seen thousands cross a dry river bed, only to have the water come crashing down once they have arrived safely on the other side. Most of all, we see a young Man preach His own gospel, His own story, a story of love, compassion, eternal life, and then we see Him go to the cross to save those who believed, and those who doubted as well, if they will simply choose Him as Saviour and LORD.

Jesus is the ultimate proof of God's great love for us. Jesus said that once He had us in His hand, we could not be snatched from it. I believe that. Don't you?

Now tell me you don't think God loves you! If you don't believe it now, you never will. But I have an idea you already knew it, didn't you? Because He has told us every day of our lives that we are the apple of His eye. He continually blesses us, He provides for us, He delivers what He has promised. He is amazing grace in every way it is possible to be. He is God, and He loves us.

So what DOES God say about me? What does He say about You? It's the same, for all of us. We are His peculiar, protected, and much cherished children. Life may not always be a bed of roses, and we will still go through trials. But at the end of the day we can rest our heads on our pillows, knowing that what the Father says about us is all that really matters, after all.

Blessings!

Where I Am, Where I Aim to Go, How You Can Help

When I started Ohiolilisview a couple of years ago, I had high aspirations. Yes, I thought, here is my ticket. This is my break. Now I'll get somewhere quick! Yup.

Didn't happen. Not like that. No way Jay! But I persevered and slowly started seeing, in my stats, that people really are reading my stuff. That gave me the encouragement to keep on keeping on. That, and the fact that God wouldn't let me give up.

I have found that there are people from all over the world reading this blog. The number of people is not astounding, but the places they live totally surprised me. While the largest number is from right here in the good old U.S. of A., including Alaska (neat! Sarah Palin, do you think?), there are some from Iran, Japan, Germany, Italy, England, Russia, Nigeria, Canada, South Korea, Ukraine, and China. Wow! And the really neat thing is there are several from each country! It is a privilege to share God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit with all of you. Some of you don't have the freedom we do here to worship and gather together. So I thank you for allowing me to share with you.

I am equally amazed at the different search engines being used. The usual ones like Internet Explorer, and Firefox, but many more that I have never heard of. Some folks use PC's and other computer types, and some are using Iphones and Blackberry's. Now that is super cool.

I am amazed, and quite appreciative, that Blogger does such a great job of gathering the stat information. It just positively captivates me!

I have created another blog on Wordpress, Angelwingdevotionals. That one is newer, but is beginning to pick up an audience as well. I write for a Christian e-magazine too, EveryDayChristian.com. And now I have two articles scheduled for publication in TruthMedia Devotionals, an online Christian women's site, both in August. I now have a Facebook Page, Lili Richey Willard, Christian Author, Devotional Writer. Each day, well ALMOST each day, I post a little article, devotional, or brief Word of the Day, which also appears on Twitter. And...last but not least, I write on Faithwriters.com, which is a totally awesome website for Christian writers.

So I have made progress. However, I want to be able to publish a devotional one day. I might write a work of fiction. Who knows? But I need your help to do this.

So if you are one of the many who have been reading this blog, please take the time to sign up to 'follow' me, and by all means, take a couple of extra minutes to give me a comment once in awhile, or a 'like' or something, for goodness sake! If I don't know what you like and don't like about my writing, then neither of us is happy.

Most of all I wish to glorify God. So please let me know if anything you have read on this website has been of value to you, if it has been a help on your walk with the Lord. Because I wish to honor Him, I am ready to invite you to make suggestions on topics you would like me to write about. I may have personally 'survived' an issue you are dealing with, or know someone who has. Or you may inspire me to spread my wings and write about something totally foreign to me! Either way, God will receive the glory and honor through it all.

The point is, I know you are visiting me! I would like to hear from my audience, and get to know you. You can help me while I am trying to help you. Please share my articles with others, and I would so appreciate you recommending this blog, and my other blogs, to your friends and family.

God has been very good to me and mine. He is my ultimate inspiration. He puts thoughts and words on my mind, and enables my clumsy fingers to type at a furious pace to get those thoughts and words in print. If I can't find the time to write, I become very frustrated, and feel like I'm caged. So you can see, this is my passion, and I need to write of what God has done in my life, and in the lives of others.

I appreciate each and every one of you. I hope you will understand this post and realize my aim is to please God first, and you right after that!

Blessings!

In The Dark

It's no joke! I am, literally, sitting in the dark! Still don't know why, but it seems a good part of the city I work in is having a power outage.

I work in a hospital, so the emergency lights are on, but those lights are not in my office. And they do take a few minutes to come on. So for the very first minutes, since I am in an interior office (which means NO WINDOW! ) I was staring into abject darkness. A little bit unnerving, I will admit!

The lights just came back on, while I am writing this. So its back to work in a few minutes. But let me tell you what I was just thinking about...

Even when we are in total darkness, and there is no light to be seen by the human eye, if Jesus lives in your heart the light is still there. It never goes out, it is never shaded or blocked, it is never out of reach. Because it is He who is the virtual light in our world.

Sitting here in those first few moments of complete, rather frightening, blackness, I realized when I felt the first hint of panic that He was still beside me. He was still holding my hand. He has promised to never leave or forsake me. So why would I think he would head out the door and out of my life, simply because a few lights went out in my building?

The lesson is to trust Him completely. He is always with us, whether we are in the dark of night, or in the blazing sunshine. He delivers on all His promises, so we can feel safe, no matter what things look like around us.

I am grateful the lights are back on. But I am more grateful that I was never alone in the dark at all.

Blessings!

Gift Giving

'A gift opens the way for the giver and ushers him into the presence of the great.'
Proverbs 18:16

Giving a gift at the appropriate times is something my mother taught me at an early age. Yet I still forget sometimes, and I even miss birthdays and the like. That does not mean I have forgotten the value of gift-giving.

We should not give gifts simply for the sake of giving them. If we do that, we are usually cultivating a motive for that giving. That is not of God. While it is wonderful to give a gift to show appreciation, or simply in thanks, we must be careful not to give for favors. That invalidates the gift's purpose. It becomes meaningless. Just as giving too many compliments soon becomes tiresome to the receiver, so does over giving.

So, consider when you are thinking of giving a gift what the true purpose of it is. Don't become one of those who give for the purpose of being noticed. Give because you care about the one receiving. Give to generate smiles, and joy. Give to give a blessing to one who may need it today. Give because giving with a cheerful heart pleases the heart of God.

For God gave us the greatest Gift of all, and He certainly does care for each and every one of us.

Blessings!

CHANGE

'Listen, I tell you a mystery; We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed.'
1 Corinthians 15:51

Change. It's something we all face, usually on a daily basis. We can't avoid it, we can't redirect it, we can't stop it. We should embrace some change, but even the changes we do not like or don't want must be dealt with.

How do we deal with change? I hope with an open heart and a calm spirit. Because since most changes in our lives are not under our direct control, they are still ours to live with. So, whatever that change may be, we must find a way to fit it into our lives, and reshape our thoughts and behaviours to accommodate it.

Remember that not all change is good, and not all is bad. There may be some that we can say 'NO' to, but there will always be the change that we do not have any recourse with. The one constant is that there will always be change in our lives.

Take a moment to consider some of the good change you have experienced. How about when you met that 'one', the one you want to spend your life with. Do you feel that was a good change? Or the promotion you got recently? Or the day you brought home your new puppy or kitty? What about the day you realized you knew Jesus as your LORD and Saviour?

Now, think about the bad change. A loved one has passed on, or is sick. It may be you who is battling an illness. Or the day you received your pink slip. Or a friendship that went bad. How about that thing or event you wanted so badly but it didn't happen? What about the days that are changed because of depression or loneliness?

All throughout God's Word we read about change. The Israelites were taken captive in Egypt. Then they were freed, to wander 40 years in the wilderness. Mary became with child, yet knew no man. King David went from a meek and mild young shepherd boy to a valiant warrior in an instant. Adam and Eve lived in glory in the garden, yet their change was drastic and sudden, all due to one sin. Jesus was transformed on the mountain. And when He was born, dark was changed into light.

Yes, change has many faces. It has many benefits and it may have many consequences. But the important thing is how we handle it. Is it with grace, or with anger? Do we smile through it, or do we frown? And how are we treating those who bring the change to us, with love or dislike? Jesus Himself faced many changes, yet He continued to shine through them all, even while suffering on the cross. He went through the ultimate change...from life, to death, to life again.

So look at your life today, and when you face a change, embrace it. Whether it be good or bad, think about what it means, what you will have to adjust to deal with it, and how you can turn it into something positive, no matter what it is. Then thank God that you can assimilate change into your life, and if it is a difficult one, ask Him to give you wisdom and grace to handle it. Find opportunity in any change, and use it to enrich your life. Do not allow it to hinder your walk with God. Rather, face it as a new adventure, with joy and excitement and wonder.

Blessings!

Today Is The Day - - May 21, 2011

They say today is the DAY! The LORD Jesus will part the clouds like a scroll, and we, His faithful, will be called home. Some have quit their jobs to travel with this group to hold signs and preach about end times.

I say, enough is enough. I'll not listen to any man or woman who teaches this. The Bible tells us, 'But of that day and hour no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.' (Matt 24:36) God has promised signs and wonders, particular events to be fulfilled, and we will know this much...the time is near.

And I believe it certainly is. He may come back today...but He may not. What is important is that we be ready, as individuals, and as the church, the unblemished Bride of Christ. So live today as you would any day, hopefully for God's purposes, for there are many who are NOT ready, and who will not meet Jesus in the air in the blink of an eye.

And do not live in fear of the DAY, for it is not fear that we should have...it should be a grateful anticipation, for on that DAY we will be delivered from all trials and tribulations and the cares of this world. And we will be forevermore in the presence of our Holy God.

I just pray we do all we can do to make sure others will be with us as we go to our Heavenly Home on that DAY. That joyous DAY! Blessings!

The In Between Day

Jesus had been crucified. He had been laid in a borrowed tomb. The disciples went away to grieve together. And the night passed.

Can you even imagine what they were feeling? Do you think they understood what had just taken place? What about Mary, who witnessed in horror the torture and death, the humiliation, the evilness, that had befallen her son? God had given her this child. And to her, even though she knew who He was, He was still the child she had conceived in purity, who she bore and raised to manhood. This was her flesh, her love, her life. This God-child, who was King of the World, was still her baby boy.

We do not really know what took place that next day. But the world had already been changed. Thunderstorms and earthquakes had taken place, the veil in the temple was torn, and the dead were raised up out of their graves and lived again. Yes, things had changed greatly. Events never before seen were talked of, were causing terror and dismay, and many were confused. Especially some of the soldiers who had been in attendance on that dark, miserable hill...

Those who had carried out the actual torture and crucifixion of our Jesus had been touched in some way by the event. Some still did not see the ramifications of, or the importance of, their actions from the day before. In fact, a few of them were most likely still bragging about money they had won in gambling, in sharing the spoils of the deaths that took place that day, including the seamless white robe that had been at the center of their games. That very special robe.

In contrast, I would think that the centurion who realized, at that last split second, who Jesus really was, had to be full of remorse, awe, and intense guilt. Many who seemed to weaken during His death process were likely feeling that way. For they had witnessed something never seen before, a man dying on the cross but forgiving those who had put Him there. He also suffered as no man had ever done, for a longer period of time, when any other man would not have been able to withstand it. But can you imagine remembering afterwards the piercing of the side, the blood, which they would have expected, but then the pure water that followed? You can bet that had never been seen before. Or since.

Even when terrible things are over, when tragedy rests its ugly head for a moment, when grief begins to truly settle in, events replay themselves over and over again in our heads. In our hearts. In our minds. Why? What if? What could I have done? Why didn't God intervene? This was, after all, His only begotten Son. Why would He not show that power that the thieves knew He had?

It was all because of Grace. God's will had to be realized, the prophecy fulfilled. Man would never have found salvation, in a more intimate, immediate, and perfect way, had Jesus not done what His Father had decreed. He was willing, but He was not looking forward to it. We know that by His prayer in the cemetery, shortly before He was arrested and taken away. But on that day, the day in between, those who were so close to the 'thing' had much to ponder, much to think about, much to marvel at. Because they witnessed the greatest event in the world to date. The beginning of the end...the opening act to the one to follow....the complete and eternal resurrection of Christ.

The In Between Day...we don't think much about it, and not much is known. These are merely my ideas of what was going on, how many were reacting and feeling, how that day would have been. We tend to jump right over that day, straight to Easter. The day of Christ's victory. But He had already known victory. Because on that in between day, He was working to do His Father's will. He was visiting hell, and taking complete control of it. He was doing a lot of things we will never know about until we are reunited with Him again. He had just experienced complete separation from the Father He so loved, but He knew He was loved beyond compare. This in between day was a day of great importance, a real day, but a forgotten day.

The important thing to take away from all of this is...there had to be an in between day before there could be a He Lives Again Day!

Blessings!

Rosebuds of Faith Devotional Series: LOVE * Accepting Others (#2)

'Accept one another then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.' Romans 15:7

Do you know someone who just seems to irritate you to no end? Is one of your relatives so difficult to be around that you avoid family gatherings? And what about that person on the street who is walking too close to you, the one who is dirty and unkempt? Are you guarding your wallet or purse just a little more than usual? Are you sure this person is out to get you?

All of us are guilty of one or more of these things. We judge before we know. We decide a person's worth based on what we observe. In the case of people we know, we judge their actions and their worth by what we 'think' we understand about them. We dismiss them as 'undesirables', even if we do love them. And by avoiding them,we stay out of the line of fire, so to speak, where we have to show love and care towards them. Because we really don't want to.

I have an elderly aunt who I do love dearly. However, she can be a very difficult person. She always has been. She will give you anything she has...but the whole county will know about it! She snoops through our mail, listens to our voice messages, and is probably the most nosy person I know. Yet I love her! She will tell me right out that I need to lose weight, or that my clothes are not in style, or that I spend too much money on frivolous stuff. And she will do this in front of other family members. Yet, STILL, I love her. And I wouldn't hurt her for the world! So, I have had to ask God to help me to accept her. Loving her is not enough.

Jesus accepts all of us. Warts, moles, broken hearts, wayward thoughts, and all. He takes us on part and parcel, withholding nothing from us.He washes us clean of our sins and iniquities with the pureness of His precious blood. He cares not that we are too fat or too thin, or that our clothes are not from Saks.He does not care if we speak perfect English, or if we are missing teeth, or if we don't have a penny to our name. He simply accepts us. So much so, that He died on a cross for us many years ago, thinking of us as He did.

There is no greater love than that which Christ has shown and continues to show to us. And as He teaches us, we are to become like Him. If we love Him, if we believe in Him, and we know who He truly is, then we should be like Him. We should accept those who are different from us, who don't look like us, talk like us,or live like us. We must show them love, no matter how they make us feel, or what we think others may think of us for doing it.

Acceptance. It is a simple but powerful word. Love. That is even more so. And, because of what Jesus did on the cross for us, acceptance and love go hand in hand.

Do it. And then watch your cares, your worries, your trepidations leave you. And see how your actions affect 'these' people. For God works wonders when love is on display. Is this not a higher gift of praise for our Heavenly Father?

Blessings!

Rosebuds of Faith Devotional Series: LOVE * Peace and Friendship (#1)

'For the sake of my brothers and friends, I will say, 'Peace be within you.'
Psalm 122:8

We all need friends and family. We want to love them, and we want and need for them to love us in return. There is no better way to do that and have that than to find peace within ourselves. And it only comes from Jesus.

When we are at complete peace, we are our most lovable! Yes, it's true! For when we experience the contentment and joy that come with peace, we are really who we are supposed to be. We have no need for walls, for hiding from feelings and emotions, no need to be cautious and always on guard against hurt. Our hearts will be cleansed from stress, and the love that fills us will pour out onto others. And when love comes freely and with no restraints, why, that is the best love of all!

Jesus loved with complete abandon. He cared not for what others thought, or what they said. He simply showed love with no bounds. Simply by watching the life of Jesus will we learn how to love like that....with truth, with life, with that wonderful peace!

Open your heart and mind, and allow Jesus to transform you into someone who is not afraid of love. For love is who Jesus is!

Blessings!

Rosebuds of Faith Series: What Would Jesus Do...in Haiti, and the World?

"And may the LORD cause you to increase and overflow with love
for one another and for everyone, just as we also do for you."
1 Thessalonians 3:12

Paul loved each of the churches. He knew he had been sent by
God, by Jesus Himself, to preach and minister to them. And
every time he began his letters, or when he was speaking directly
to them, he always told them of his love for them.

God is the author of love. He is the epitome of what love is, does,
and will do. How many of us would give our children up for someone
else? How often would we sacrifice all we have for a person who
has nothing? When we ask, 'What Would Jesus Do?', His answer
is always....everything, all the time.

Now we live in times where the need is great, where people suffer
continually, where life and death virtually hangs in the balance.
Something as little as one bottle of water can make all the difference.
A kind word, a warm blanket, a smile filled with hope, a piece of bread...
all these things can turn the tide, and bring joy, even if only for a brief
moment. It may be long enough to give a renewed determination for
survival. And it may introduce the love of God, which will help a person
pull up their boots and get on with it, with helping those around them
who are in the very same situation, and forging a new day for their
people.

Jesus is among the people of Haiti. There are missionaries there who
have devoted their lives to changing that world, that very culture. Lives
have been changed, and more will be changed today, simply because
someone cares. Someone loves others enough to bring the wonderful
cause of Christ to them. And this will be displayed from here on out,
as the world gathers to provide relief, food, drink, medical care, housing,
and everything needed to rebuild and restore. Yes, Jesus is very
definitely there, right smack dab in the middle of the whole thing.

Search your heart today. No matter how difficult it is to contribute,
especially in our current economy, God will make a way. There is
something you can give. Any amount of money, no matter how small,
will be of great use. Items that are needed have been posted through
churches and credible, reliable relief agencies. The NC Baptist Men's
Disaster Relief Team is an excellent avenue through which to send the
love of Christ. And don't forget the most wonderful way to help....prayer.
We can all do that, no matter what our financial circumstance. And God
is glorified when we do.

Every one of us has at some time or another needed a hand up, a hand out,
and a hand held. Give the same back to the people of Haiti. And don't let it
stop there. There are needy people, both physically and spiritually,
all around us.

Blessings!
